The Shanxi Yuncheng Phase II Pumped Storage Power Station is a key energy project in China's national planning. With a total installed capacity of 1.2 million kilowatts, the hub project primarily consists of structures including the upper reservoir, lower reservoir, water conveyance system, underground powerhouse, and surface switchyard. Upon completion, the power station will play a vital role in alleviating peak-load regulation conflicts within the power grid, enhancing renewable energy integration capacity, ensuring the safe and stable operation of the grid, and improving power supply quality.
The second phase of the Yuncheng Pumped Storage Power Station in Shanxi Province features densely clustered caverns, complex geological conditions, demanding technical requirements, and significant construction challenges. During the project's initial phase, the project department selected two new types of equipment—the WD632DS dual-sliding-arm computerized rock drilling rig and the WD622 dual-arm computerized rock drilling rig—for excavation hole and anchor bolt hole operations.
Face Drill Rig WD632DS
Multi-Functional Machine Revolutionizes Tunnel Construction Efficiency

To address the complex tunnel cross-sections and high operational demands of the project, the site deployed the face drill rig WD632DS and technologies. Its pioneering sliding arm structure significantly reduces overall vehicle length, enabling seamless adaptation to diverse tunnel cross-sections and curved passages. Moreover, it achieves a highly efficient “one machine, multiple functions” mode for both excavation holes and anchor bolt holes, completely eliminating the pain point of frequent machine relocation in traditional construction.
Under standardized operation, the face drills approximately 120 holes with an average depth of 4 meters. Each shift maintains a stable drilling duration of 3 hours, achieving a tunnel advance of 4 meters post-blasting. Leveraging the equipment's high efficiency, the project surpasses an average monthly advance of 120 meters and completes 37,500 meters of anchor drilling per month. Additionally, the equipment's sliding-lift cab allows operators to closely monitor drilling conditions on the side walls and crown, effectively controlling over- and under-excavation while balancing construction efficiency and engineering quality.
Face Drill Rig WD622
Precision Breakthrough in Anchor Rod Construction Technology Pain Points

Additionally, the project is equipped with the WD622, primarily used for 6-meter and 9-meter anchor bolt hole construction in the transportation tunnel and main plant. The cross-sectional area of this zone measures 10×10m, with 6-meter-long anchor rods and 6-meter-deep holes. Drilling diameters range from 64mm to 76mm. Each anchor rod installation takes 3 minutes, enabling completion of 13-15 rods per hour. To address the common issue of drill bit jamming in fractured rock layers, Wuxin Equipment specially customized easy-return drill bits. This effectively overcomes technical challenges, significantly enhancing operational stability and continuity. It provides robust support for the orderly advancement of anchor installation and subsequent grouting processes.
The efficient collaborative operation between the face drill rig WD632DS and WD622 leveraged core advantages of intelligence, flexibility, and adaptability. This not only fortified construction safety measures but also markedly elevated project efficiency and quality. Moving forward, Uniroc will continue prioritizing technological innovation to refine intelligent construction solutions, empowering more pumped-storage hydropower and major energy projects.
